I've actually been getting into Tolkien again lately. I finally read all the way through the Silmarillion. It's not really a book I would recommend, but that's probably because Tolkien didn't actually finish it in his lifetime. His son, Christopher had to piece together fragments from a lifetime of notes that his father left behind. It's hard to read, but it is pretty cool to get a glimpse of what was in J.R.R.'s head when he was trying to create this universe.

Something I would recommend, however, would be an essay that Tolkien wrote called "on faerie stories". It offers a compelling argument in defense of the need for fantasy and escapism. That is something of profound importance to me.
